Africa Changed Me. Here’s Why Everyone Should Experience a Safari at Least Once.

I expected incredible wildlife. I expected unforgettable landscapes. I expected thousands of photographs.

What I didn't expect was to come home inspired in ways I never imagined.

As the founder of Asteri Collection, I'm constantly searching for beauty, color, texture, and stories worth sharing. Africa delivered all of that—and then some. Every sunrise over the savanna, every game drive, every conversation with local guides, and every quiet moment watching wildlife reminded me why travel is one of life's greatest teachers.

This wasn't just another vacation.

It became one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

Preparing for Safari: What to Expect

Before leaving, I spent weeks researching what to pack, what wildlife I might see, and how to prepare for Southern Africa in June.

One of the biggest surprises?

June is winter in Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

That doesn't mean snow—it means wonderfully comfortable safari weather.

Mornings can be surprisingly cold, especially riding in an open safari vehicle before sunrise. Afternoon temperatures are warm and pleasant, and the dry season means very few mosquitoes compared to the rainy months.

The first lesson I learned was simple:

Layers are everything.

You may start the day wearing a thermal shirt, hoodie, jacket, gloves, and even a face covering to protect against chilly winds and dust, only to be down to a T-shirt by lunchtime.

It's all part of the adventure.

Victoria Falls: First Impressions

No photograph truly prepares you for Victoria Falls.

You hear it before you see it.

The distant roar grows louder with every step until suddenly one of the world's greatest natural wonders appears through the mist.

Known locally as "The Smoke That Thunders," Victoria Falls is both powerful and peaceful at the same time. Standing there, watching millions of gallons of water plunge into the gorge below, gives you an appreciation for nature that's difficult to describe.

It's one of those places that reminds you just how small we really are.

Botswana's Wildlife: Better Than I Ever Imagined

Nothing—and I mean nothing—prepared me for Botswana.

Every game drive felt like opening another page in an incredible wildlife documentary, except this time I wasn't watching it on television.

I was in it.

One morning we found one of Africa's rarest predators:

An endangered pack of African Painted Dogs.

Not only were they there…

They had eleven puppies.

Watching them interact was unforgettable. 

Moments later the adults launched into an incredible pursuit of impala, demonstrating why they're among Africa's most successful hunters.

Nature, however, never tells just one story.

A hyena quietly waited nearby, hoping to steal an easy meal if the opportunity arose.

Above us, vultures perched patiently in nearby trees, nature's cleanup crew waiting for whatever happened next.

That single moment perfectly illustrated how every species is connected.

Of course, Botswana kept delivering unforgettable encounters.

Lions casually walked within five feet of our jeep, completely unfazed by our presence.

A massive bull elephant decided we'd gotten just a little too close and reminded us who was really in charge with an unforgettable charge.

And then there were the hippos.

Beautiful?

Absolutely.

Friendly?

Not even a little.

Despite their relaxed appearance, hippos are among Africa's most dangerous animals, and watching their personalities unfold quickly taught us to give them the respect they deserve.

Everywhere we looked there were stunning birds, antelope, giraffes, zebras, elephants, crocodiles, and countless other animals thriving in one of the world's most remarkable ecosystems.

It was sensory overload in the very best way.

What I Packed (and What I'd Pack Again)

If you're planning a June safari, here's what earned a permanent place on my packing list.

Clothing

• Lightweight jackets
• Hoodies (my Asteri hoodies got plenty of use)
• Long-sleeve shirts
• Thermal base layers
• Long pants
• T-shirts
• Gloves
• Warm hat
• Neck gaiter or face mask for chilly, dusty morning drives

Footwear

Comfort matters.

I wore lightweight Asteri sneakers throughout much of the trip. They were comfortable during travel days, easy to clean after dusty game drives, and versatile enough for everything from airport terminals to evenings at the lodge.

Gear

A dedicated camera is wonderful, but I was amazed by what my iPhone Pro Max 17 captured.

The photos and videos exceeded my expectations, and having it ready at a moment's notice meant I never missed those once-in-a-lifetime encounters.

Don't forget:

• Sunglasses
• Sunscreen
• Bug repellent (although this was provided at all our camps and on our game drives)
• Refillable water bottle (provided by Overseas Adventure Travel)
• Portable battery pack

Favorite Safari Moments

Some of my favorite memories had nothing to do with checking animals off a list.

They came from sharing the experience.

Morning and night game drives became daily adventures.

Evenings around the dinner table introduced us to incredible people from Southern Africa and fellow Americans who quickly became friends.

We laughed.

We exchanged stories.

We celebrated unforgettable sightings together.

And yes…

I sampled mopane worms.

Let's just say I can now officially say I've tried them.

Will I be ordering them again?

Probably not.

Crocodile, however, was surprisingly good.

One of the greatest gifts of the trip was learning about the Southern African Countries themselves.

The incredible diversity of tribes, languages, traditions, and cultures gave every destination its own personality and reminded me that Africa is not one place—it's an extraordinary collection of many unique cultures.

Lessons From Africa

Africa leaves you with more than photographs.

It changes perspective.

I learned to pack lighter.

To slow down.

To appreciate silence and that of nature.

To put the camera down occasionally and simply watch.

Perhaps the biggest lesson came from seeing firsthand the delicate balance between people and wildlife.

As human populations grow, animals lose more of their natural habitat.

Yet throughout Southern Africa I also saw inspiring examples of local communities finding creative ways to coexist with wildlife rather than simply competing with it.

Some species are thriving.

Others, like the African Painted Dog, remain endangered and depend heavily on conservation efforts.

Seeing that reality firsthand made conservation feel deeply personal.

Final Thoughts

When I boarded the plane home, I carried thousands of photos.

But I also brought home something far more valuable.

Fresh inspiration.

A deeper appreciation for nature.

A renewed respect for the people who dedicate their lives to protecting it.

And, admittedly…

A slight creative obsession with hippos, zebras, giraffes and more.
